Mark Akins is a 3rd generation Coloradan, a member of the Plein Air Artists of Colorado, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and the Outdoor Painters society (Texas). His mission is to paint for the love of color. His hope is that upon viewing one of his pieces, a memory is kindled, an emotion touched, or you simply wish you could have been at the time and location he has attempted to capture on canvas. He paints with quick, purposeful strokes to capture the spontaneity of the moment. the best compliment is when Mark hears a patron remark, “In Mark’s paintings I can feel the time of day and tell where the light is coming from.”

At the University of Colorado, Boulder, Mark earned his Master’s degree in Instruction and Curriculum design and taught K-3rd grade for 15 years. Now into his 10th year as a full-time artist, he focuses on plein air and studio landscapes in oil. Mark states, “I have been blessed with a wonderful wife, family, and friends who support me in my artistic pursuits, as well as an affinity for the beauty around us. My desire is to capture it on canvas.”

Mark gained an appreciation, respect and an understanding of the focused pursuit of creating fine representational art through artists he represented at his Scottsdale gallery including Everette Raymond Kinstler, Peter Cox, Don Stone, Joseph Shephard, and Delbert Gish. He has honed his craft studying with Doug Dawson, Josh Been and Don Sahli.  His work is included in the Majestic Gallery in Idaho Springs and The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade, as well as in numerous private and public collections.
